How do I check if an NGO in India is genuine?
Start with the public record: every genuine non-profit is registered somewhere — NITI Aayog's Darpan, a state societies registry, or the FCRA list if it takes foreign funds. Mitr lists organisations straight from those registries, so you can look one up, see its registration details and check whether the organisation itself has claimed and confirmed its profile.
What is an NGO Darpan ID?
Darpan is NITI Aayog's public register of India's voluntary organisations. An organisation that signs up gets a unique Darpan ID, which government departments use to identify it for grants and schemes. It is a strong sign an organisation exists on the public record — though it is a registration, not a quality rating.
Is Mitr free?
Yes — searching the directory, listing an organisation and claiming a profile are all free. Mitr does not sell placement, ranking or trust levels.
How does an NGO get verified on Mitr?
Every organisation starts as Registered, imported from a public registry. When the people who run it claim the profile and add their registration details, it becomes Verified. Higher levels — Trusted, Premier, Exemplary — are earned over time from confirmed activity on the network, not bought.
